MANILA, Philippines - Meralco rates will be going down this month, but rates may go up in December due to the Malampaya shutdown.
Meralco is implementing a P0.54/kwh reduction as generation and other charges are went down. The decrease means a reduction of P107 for 200 kwh users, P161 for 200 kwh users, P215 for 300 kwh users and P269 for 400 kwh users.
But Meralco also announced that it has been alerted of the month-long maintenance shutdown of the Malampaya Natural Gas Facility which powers three of its independent power plants.
Sta.Rita and San Lorenzo and Ilijan power plants all run on natural gas but will use liquid condesate and diesel from November 9 to December 8.
While Meralco said the largest power distributor is assured of enough power supply in those dates, it already expects higher prices electricity for this period since the alternative fuel to natural gas is certainly more expensive.
Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla assures consumers in Luzon that there will be no power interruptions in the mentioned maintenance dates but has also alerted consumers of higher priced electricity.
