MANILA, Philippines – Aside from bad weather, a small budget can be a downer when it comes to travelling to a new place.
On ANC’s “On The Money,” travel blogger Lois Yasay said there are several “travel hacks” that can help you have an exciting trip without going over budget.
Before embarking on an adventure in a new destination, you should first prioritize your travel wants to know how to spend your travel funds.
If top on the list is shopping, decide on specific items you want and stick to these items.
If you prioritize lodging, you should decide whether you will go for budget or luxury accommodations.
To get the best of both worlds, Yasay suggests booking a luxury place for the first few days and then transfer into a more budget-friendly place for the rest of the trip.
She also advises checking online sites for condominium or apartment units that you can rent for a minimum number of nights.
For those on a really tight budget, staying in hostels or homes are good options.
“These families will open, let’s say they have a room or two available in their house, and they can host you. They can even include the meals, and that can be a very, very good option if you’re on a budget. You still get the privacy, but you also get a part of the culture because you get to interact with the family,” Yasay said.
Those looking for a way to stay at a stranger’s place for free can try “couchsurfing,” but Yasay, who has tried this in her past travels, encouraged travelers to check in with friends daily via social media, email and phone so they know where you are.
For foodie travelers, Yasay suggests choosing one or two fancy restaurants and then saving on other meals by choosing local.
“Follow the locals or get recommendations from people who have already traveled there so you don’t really have to spend so much on food especially if you’re willing to try local delicacies,” she said.
She noted that condo units and apartments include a kitchen, which also allows travelers to save on food.
Availing of travel package deals, which usually include transportation, lodging and airport transfer, will also give good savings particularly to those who have limited time or not enough information on a place.
“If you’re too concerned about budget, just lighten up and splurge a little bit. You don’t want to be too focused on the money, focus on the experience, on the memories that you are making in that trip,” Yasay said.
