MANILA, Philippines - If you're headed to the mall on election day (May 13), don't go there too early since some malls are opening later than usual.
This comes as the country's biggest mall operators have heeded the Department of Energy's call to reduce power consumption on election day, in order to ensure a stable electric power supply in the country.
SM malls are opening at 12 noon on Monday, instead of 10 a.m., and will close at 9 p.m.
In a letter to Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla dated May 10, SM Supermalls president Annie Garcia said the company supports the DOE's initiative.
"In coordination with, and as directed by our respective distribution utilities, SM Supermalls will undertake voluntary load curtailment and use of generators during this period," Garcia said.
Robinsons Malls are also scheduled to open at 12 noon and close at 9 p.m.
Meanwhile, all seven major Ayala malls in the country are opening at 10 a.m. as usual. But the Ayala malls will use their own generator sets during peak hours on election day.
