MANILA - Detained businessman Cedric Lee has until May 8 to submit his counter-affidavit on the P194.47 million tax evasion case he is facing before the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Assistant State Prosecutor Allan Stewart Mariano, the fiscal handling the tax case filed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), granted Lee's motion for extension of time to file his counter-affidavit and defense, taking into consideration Lee's recent arrest in Eastern Samar.
Lee and his lawyer Howard Calleja, were present in Monday afternoon's hearing but refused to issue statements to the media.
Lee was still wearing the same shirt and pair of shorts he was wearing upon arrival on Sunday at the NAIA. He was wearing slippers and was handcuffed.
The BIR charged Lee and one of his firms, Izumo Contractors Inc., with tax evasion for underdeclaration of income for taxable years 2006 up to 2009, and failure to pay the corresponding taxes.
