Tanduay, ABS-CBN sign pact for Pasig River clean-up

MANILA, Philippines - Tanduay Distillers Inc. is donating P2.5 million for the Pasig River clean-up and rehabilitation project of the ABS-CBN Foundation.

In a statement, Tanduay said it is committed to supporting ABS-CBN Foundation's "Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig" (KBPIP).

Tanduay Holdings president Miguel Tan and managing director and deputy CEO Wilson Young signed the contract with Gina Lopez, managing director of ABS-CBN Foundation. The contract formalizing Tanduay's committment to donate P2.5 million for the KBPIP project.

Lopez, who is the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission chairperson, started the multi-sector project for the clean-up and rehabilitation of the Pasig River two years ago.

The funds will be used to install 2 Active Island Reactors on the historic Estero de San Miguel, which is located near Tanduay's plant in Quiapo. These reactors use a technology created by Biomatrix Water, that will increase the amount of oxygen in the water.

The first reactor was installed in the waterway between Pedro Gil and 13 De Agosto along the side of the new Paco market.

Tanduay Distillers is active in environment conservation advocacy. Its facilities use a sophisticated wastewater management process that is recognized for complying with international standards for green practices.

The KBPIP project will cover other esteros behind the Malacanang Palace, which include Estero de Aviles, Estero de Uli-uli, Estero de Quiapo, Estero de San Sabastian in 2012-2013; Quezon City  tributaries and the San River in 2013-2015; and finally, the Pasig River on 2015-2016.
