Amazon's chief technology officer to visit PH

MANILA, Philippines -'s chief technology officer and vice president Dr. Werner Vogels will visit the Philippines next week.

Vogels will be the special guest at Kickstart Ventures, Inc.'s Startup Mixer, a ?regular ?community event ?for startup founders, mentors, and investors on April 30. The event will be held at The Globe Tower in Bonifacio Global City.

"We are excited about the visit of Dr. Werner Vogels who is Amazon’s number two guy. It only shows Amazon’s strong belief in the Philippines as a growing market for cloud services. We are also extremely proud to have him as a speaker for the Startup Mixer. Startups in the Kickstart investment portfolio have been using Amazon Web Services since the early days, thus, it is a rare treat for all of us to meet the person instrumental in making new technologies such as this possible," Minette Navarrete, President of Kickstart Ventures, said.

Vogels, who is responsible for driving Amazon’s technology vision, will talk about Amazon Web Services (AWS), trends coming out of Silicon Valley and how startups can learn and gain from them.

AWS is a broad set of global compute, storage, database, analytics, application, and deployment services that help organizations move faster, lower IT costs, and scale applications. These services power a wide variety of workloads including web and mobile applications, data processing and warehousing, storage, archive, among others.

All 17 startups under Kickstart’s portfolio currently enjoys $2,500 worth of free credits from AWS which they can use in whatever way they want. Better performing startups also get an additional $5,000 worth of credits.

Prior to joining Amazon, Vogels worked as a researcher at Cornell University where he was a principal investigator in several research projects that target the scalability and robustness of mission-critical enterprise computing systems. He has held positions of VP of Technology and CTO in companies that handled the transition of academic technology into industry.

Kickstart is Globe Telecom's incubator and investment firm which helps startups operating in the Philippines to build robust businesses and technical foundations, and to scale.
