MANILA, Philippines – Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is set to file today a petition to recover the January generation charge based on the recalculated figure of P0.45 per kilowatt hour (all-in including taxes is P0.65/kwh).
Meralco wants the charge recovered in six equal tranches, or P0.075/kwh (all-in including taxes is P0.10/kwh), but the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) said it will still hold hearings so that consumers and other cause-oriented groups can still oppose and present their arguments.
The earliest that the ERC can act is still 30 days from filing and within 75 days, the commission may grant a provisional authority.
When asked if this might be an additional burden for consumers who are expected to face more spikes in future generation charge as the summer season sets in, the ERC said these things will be taken into consideration.
ERC said it will make sure that the ruling will have the least impact on the consumers, which may mean that the recovery of the generation charge will be staggered.
Meralco has not yet released the recalculated generation charge for December since the existing is still under the temporary restraining order of the Supreme Court.
