MANILA, Philippines - Philex Mining Corp. said it welcomes the Mines and Geosciences Bureau's move of allowing it to open part of its Padcal mine temporarily in order to fill up its tailings pond.
"We thank the MGB for this decision involving the ‘urgent remediation measures’ for our tailings pond," Michael Toledo, senior vice president at Philex Mining, said in a statement late Tuesday night.
"With this development, we are even more inspired to work harder toward the immediate remediation and rehabilitation of the affected areas," Toledo continued.
The MGB on Tuesday gave Philex Mining permission to re-open a part of the Padcal mine for four months but only to fill its tailings pond which is needed to prevent another dam collapse.
A third part monitoring team has been tapped by the government to keep watch over Philex Mining's operations during the four-month period.
Padcal mine operations have been suspended since August last year after a waste spill that affected Balog Creek and the Agno River. The miner has already paid the government P1.034 billion in fines for the incident and has been tasked to clean up affected areas.
Philex Mining is expected to resume normal operations at Padcal mine in the second half of the year after completing clean-up and rehabilitation of affected areas.
