MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) will receive funding assistance from the Australian government worth P6 billion, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said.

Bishop visited the Philippines to launch the education initiative Basic Education Sector Transformation (BEST) program, which supports the Aquino administration's K to 12 program.

She said the BEST program is a continuation of Australia’s commitment to partner with the Philippines “to promote prosperity, reduce poverty and enhance stability."

The program aims to help improve teaching and learning quality and access to education as well as to strengthen systems in the Philippines.

It will be implemented at the national level but will initially focus on the National Capital Region, Bicol Region, Northern Mindanao, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Eastern Visayas.

BEST was launched at the Neptali Gonzales High School in Mandaluyong City on Thursday.
