MANILA, Philippines – Is mixing business and romance a good idea? The brains behind Chestknots, a photography and styling studio, believe so.

Photographer Jayjay Lucas said the idea of putting up Chestknots came when he married his then girlfriend, stylist Feliz Diestro.

“I was doing photography for another studio, and my wife was doing corporate. When we got married, since we really wanted to start something on our own, we decided to open our own studio,” Jayjay said on ANC’s “Shoptalk.”

Chestknots provides photography and styling services for pre-nuptial shoots, weddings, and post-marriage.

Jayjay said apart from the both of them pursuing their respective passions, what makes their business successful is communication.

“You have to decide on things together and move together. You can’t assign tasks to each other, like you do this, I do that, it’s really working together through and through,” he said.

Communication is also key in building good relationships with their clients.

“The key is just making things casual, getting to know them personally, it’s like having a family member around when we shoot. That makes the environment more relaxed, brings out their natural emotions which makes a good photograph,” said Feliz.

The couple said it also helped that they put God in the center of their relationship and ask him for guidance when they make big decisions.

“Especially when we disagree on things, we just really ask for wisdom. And eventually, God provides an answer if it’s a yes, a no or a wait,” said Feliz.

The couple said they usually disagree on the feasibility of a concept, with Jayjay being more conservative and Feliz willing to take more risks, which they believe give their business relationship the balance it needs to make it work.

Feliz added that the setup works because they are able to discuss their ideas freely even when they get home.

“It’s a joy to talk about work at home if the kind of work that you do is something you love to do together,” she said.

Chestknots offers standalone photography packages ranging from P68,000-P188,000 as well as styling packages ranging from P10,000-P88,000.
