MANILA, Philippines - Aside from the EDSA rehabilitation project, the Metro Manila Council has also approved the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) expansion project on Friday.
The P8.43-billion project involves adding 52 coaches for the MRT-3, which runs from North Avenue in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City.
The expansion of the mass transit would translate into a 60 to 70 percent increase in its capacity.
The MRT-3 carries about 500,000 passengers everyday, way above its capacity of 350,000. Aside from long lines, passengers have complained about broken escalators and elevators in various MRT-3 stations.
The government is set to take over the train system as it lays out plans to buy out private entities owning stakes in the MRT-3. After such move, the government plans to bid out an operation and maintenance contract for the mass transit.
