MANILA, Philippines – Around 38,000 jobs in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector are expected to be available once the Norkis Cyberpark in Mandaue City, Cebu is completed in three to five years, Norkis Group of Companies chairman Dr. Norberto Quisumbing Jr. said on Friday.
The Norkis Cyberpark is a 2.8-hectare BPO office development adjacent to Mandaue’s biggest mall, the J Center Mall, along A.S. Fortuna Street.
The project is masterplanned for five office towers, the first of which is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by September 2014.
Danilo Ignacio, chairman and chief executive of development manager DEI Properties Inc., said the first tower, the Norkis One, is expected to generate around 3,000 jobs.
“The motivation there is job generation. Providing employment is very close to the heart of Dr. Quisumbing,” Ignacio said in a press briefing.
Quisumbing’s company is involved in the manufacturing and distribution of motorcycles, but he said he sees a lot of potential in the BPO industry.
He said the number of employment opportunities that will open in BPO offices is the motivation in building the Norkis Cyberpark.
“The potential employment would be 38,000, and these are highly paid employees. This is the motivation, generate employment so they will no longer have to seek employment abroad. They will be well-trained and well-treated in our own homeland,” Quisumbing said.
“When you hear a cruise ship plying all over the world, around 60 percent of the crew is Filipinos. Why can’t we provide them jobs here? And it is the BPO that can give them the opportunity,” he added.
Quisumbing said the P6 billion project will be financed by equity and bank loans.
The six-storey Norkis One, with a gross floor area of 9,000 sqm, will be complemented by The Arcade, a retail strip featuring food, service, and entertainment shops.
Ignacio said around P300 million will be spent for the construction of the first tower.
The second tower will have 8 floors; the third will have 10 floors; the fourth will have 12 floors; while the fifth building will have 20 floors.
“Taking a page from the hard lessons of the recent earthquake and super typhoon, our consultants have designed Norkis Cyberpark and its structures with future calamities in mind. The buildings and the development will be designed to ensure we are ready should something similar happen in the future,” Quisumbing said.
Cebu was recently ranked the 8th major destination of global outsourcing companies in the 2014 ranking of investment advisory firm Tholons.
BPO companies are targeting to employ 1.3 million Filipinos in 2016.
