MANILA, Philippines - Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said it will begin commercial pilot operation of prepaid electricity in 2,000 selected households in June this year.
The utility is currently holding a pilot test for 40 residents in Angono, Rizal. It aims to kick off commercial operation by December 2013 with around 40,000 customers in Angono, Binangonan, Pasig and Taytay.
Meralco senior vice president Alfredo Panlilio says the company's vision is for consumers to control their consumption, with no bill deposits and knowing one's balance days before it is exhausted.
According to Panlilio, they will send text messages to prepaid subscribers to update them with their load balance and requirements. Loads will be in P100, P200, P300, P500 and P1,000 denominations and can be purchased from Meralco offices, Bayad centers and even sari-sari stores.
Meralco said it will soon set up a unit that will answer queries from consumers interested in the prepaid system.
