TOKYO - Social game site operator Gree Inc. said Monday it has overcharged minors using its site due to a flaw in its filtering settings.
In total, 733 minors who pay by credit card and who were using the service via feature phones between April 26 and Sept. 7 were charged in excess of 28.11 million yen, it said.
Gree sets the monthly charge limits for minors aged 15 and under at 5,000 yen, and for those aged between 16 and 19 at 10,000 yen. However, there were defects in the program that sets the limits, it said, adding that 30 such users were charged more than 100,000 yen each.
The company said it became aware of the issue in September but chose not to disclose it, deeming that only a small number of users was affected. It said it will notify them and refund those who come forward.
"We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the delay in our information disclosure," the company said in a statement.
