OPINION: Fed up

Fed up with lousy French candidates, the French have launched a one-million signature campaign to draft Barack Obama for the French 2017 presidential race.

CNN reports that “the organizers of Obama17 admit the idea is totally crazy. But the cool thing is that once you get past the craziness, you start thinking it is possible. And who cares that he’s not French? He’s Barack Obama.” Or better yet, Justin Trudeau.

“That it is a joke is beside the point.” They want to show that the French are fed up with French political choices.

A respectable if not a winning vote—even if neither can assume office—for the unqualified Obama or Trudeau will deny the same tired old faces the 50% vote to avoid a run-off election.

And what if Obama won? What more Justin Trudeau, whose name and roots are French? All it takes to remove their disqualification is for the president of the French Assembly to naturalize either one.

France, being a great nation and a civilization unto itself does not demand natural birth. The French embrace as one of themselves anyone superior in mind and morals. It is a republic of intelligence as it is of letters—or was not too long ago. When US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright retired, the Czech Republic invited her to run for president.

As far as I am concerned, and that’s a lot, the only constitutional change we need is the deletion of natural born citizenship as a qualification for president. Natural born citizenship has not ensured any degree of quality in our past elected choices.

Now you might say, Hey! Remove the natural born citizenship requirement and what is to stop a Chinese general from running for president?

Hey! Again! He won’t need to run if our elected leaders do again what they did when the Japanese invaded. Turn the country over to the enemy. He will install himself as president or military governor.
And what would be the difference between an outright enemy president and a natural born Manchurian candidate?

Naturalizing foreigners to qualify them to run is not even a gamble. It is certain to be a sure improvement in Filipino electoral choices.
