MANILA, Philippines - Senator Koko Pimentel says he does not agree with Senator Pia Cayetano's view that reproductive health is part of local government units' (LGUs) primary health care responsibility.
Pimentel, who is against the reproductive health (RH) bill, also tells ANC that the Senate can define when life begins without fear of putting a mother's life in peril.
Cayetano, the lead sponsor of the RH bill in the Senate, believes otherwise.
She says the local government code clearly states that the responsibility for primary health care and maternal health care is with the LGUs.
Cayetano, who debated with senators opposing the measure, said trying to define conception could be dangerous.
"This is the danger of people pretending to be scientific experts. We have to leave that to the DOH, to the FDA and also base it on international standards. Let's not step into the shoes of these experts because we are not," she says. - ANC, Prime Time, November 19, 2012
