MANILA - The military’s Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom) confirms there have been sightings of Irish priest Michael Sinnott in Lanao del Norte.
The WesMinCom, however, has yet to confirm that Sinnott is indeed being held by Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) members.
"We know he was sighted in an area where there is preponderance of MILF members. We can't name specific suspects we look into, definitely we are looking at certain personalities in that location," WesMinCom spokesman Maj. David Hontiveros told ANC's Top Story Wednesday.
Hontiveros adds no one has claimed responsibility for Sinnott's abduction.
The 79-year-old Irish missionary was taken from Pagadian City Sunday night.
The WesMinCom also declined to reveal if Abdurahman Macapaar alias Commander Bravo is among the suspects.
Bravo is wanted for leading attacks on civilian communities in Central Mindanao last year, when the Supreme Court stopped the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) between the Philippine Government and the MILF.
"We can't qualify if it's likely or unlikely to be true. Suffice to say, the investigation is covering all angles. We're concentrating on the safe and speedy recovery of the victim," Hontiveros also said.
The MILF, meanwhile, says its men in the Zamboanga Peninsula are now checking if some of its men are involved in the kidnapping.
MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu says the the verification is being done by one of the members of the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities.
But Kabalu says it is unlikely that any MILF commander is involved.
"We discount the possiblity na meron pong elemento ng MILF directly involved dito. Never in the history of the MILF na na-involve iyong mga tauhan sa kidnapping. Meron tayong involvement pero sa pag-rescue," Kabalu also told Top Story.
Kabalu added that Bravo's involvement is a remote possibility.
"Tumahimik na siya sapagkat apparently, siya po ay naging very controversial noong pagkatapos na hindi mapirmahan and MOA-AD at sumunod siya sa command na he had to back off from the area immediately," Kabalu said.
The MILF spokesman added that the MILF had also been accused in the 2007 kidnapping of Italian priest Giancarlo Bossi.
He recalls the group was eventually cleared when Bossi was released after 39 days. - ABS-CBN News Channel
