When one woman got the chance to celebrate her first Valentine's Day with her husband as a married couple, she decided to do it with a delicious twist.
For Guia Joanna Gregorio-Lazarte, 2018 seemed the perfect year to overthrow cliches, so she turned the tables and bought her husband a bouquet. However, instead of sweet-smelling blooms, her gift featured her husband's favorite food--succulent, golden brown KFC fried chicken.

It was a quirky idea that turned a yearly celebration for the couple into one they shared with the world, which stopped for a minute to savor the couple's Valentine's moment.
Lazarte met Kraig Lazarte, her office crush-turned-husband, some time in 2016--a year after she broke up with an ex-boyfriend.
Although it was not the perfect time for her to start a new relationship, she said her fragile heart did not stop the heavens from writing their love story.
"Sabi ko kay Lord, kung siya na talaga, okay lang kahit hindi muna ako i-add sa Facebook or kunin iyong number ko. Kasi kapag parang nagpapakita agad [iyong mga lalaki] na gusto ka nila, marami sa ganun iyong gusto ka lang sa simula tapos magiging option ka lang nila," she said in an interview with ABS-CBN News.
But she confessed she was very happy when her officemate finally asked for her mobile number. Their relationship only grew deeper since then.
However, despite their happy love life, Lazarte said that they never had a fancy dinner date. In fact, their first "date" was during an office lunch at a nearby fast food restaurant.
Little did she know, their "simple" date would let her get to know Kraig and allow her to fall in love with him.
During that date, she also learned how much her husband loves fried chicken at that particular restaurant. "Nothing can compare" to the chicken there, he said.
"Gustong-gusto lang niya [ng fried chicken]. Well, mahilig sila sa fried chicken. Kasi anim silang magkakapatid. Pero siya, lagi niyang sinasabi na hindi niya ipagpapalit iyong KFC chicken," Lazarte said.
On one of his birthdays, Lazarte even threw her husband a birthday party at one of the fast food chain's branches, which he enjoyed.
"Noong 25th birthday niya, I surprised him sa KFC kasi nalaman ko noon na sobrang fan pala talaga siya ng KFC," she said.
"Natutunugan niya ako noon na I'm cooking something for him. So sabi niya 'wag mo na akong i-surprise. Kahit bigyan mo na lang ako ng KFC chicken masaya na ako," she added.

It only took a few months before she knew he was The One for her. When he popped the question, she immediately said "Yes".
"Dati kasi 'pag single ka, gusto mo 'pag ikakasal ka na, kumpleto na lahat. Stable ka na, nagawa mo na lahat ng gusto mo, may bahay na kayo," she said.
"Pero nung nakilala ko sya, sabi ko hindi ko naman kailangan lahat ng iyon. Puwede naman na kasama ko siya na magsimula sa buhay."
Since this year will be their first Valentine's Day as a married couple, Lazarte thought she wanted to make their celebration special by giving her husband something extra special.
She searched for some unique surprise ideas and found pictures of unconventional bouquets online, like the bacon and chocolate bouquets that went viral years ago.
Finally, she got the right inspiration and tried her luck with her husband's favorite resto. She inquired about the possibility of ordering a customized bouquet filled with KFC's finger lickin' good fried chicken. Luckily, the restaurant granted her wish.
Aside from a full heart, Kraig certainly got a full stomach on Valentine's Day.
Despite being newlyweds, Lazarte has gained much insight from their years together as a couple on how to keep a relationship happy--if you're going to give your loved one a surprise, make sure it has a personal touch, and a lot of love behind it.
