SBMA suspends waste dumping in Subic Bay
MANILA, Philippines – The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has suspended waste dumping operations of US contractor Glenn Defense Marine Philippines as well as other waste service contractors in Subic Bay.
But the SBMA insists that there is no evidence that Glenn Defense dumped toxic, hazardous or domestic waste.
The SBMA also said the waste dump occurred far from Subic Bay.
Glenn Marine’s CEO, retired Vice Admiral Mateo Mayuga, also clarified that the waste dumped in the water was not hazardous.
“I do not want to unduly alarm our countrymen. Kapag sinabi kasing toxic waste, iba ‘yun eh, pero kapag sinabi mong may toxicity, it is how you describe the water. May toxicity, pero hindi toxic,” he told ANC’s “Top Story” on Friday.
Mayuga also noted that SBMA only suspended waste dumping operations of all ships in Subic Bay.
“Hindi suspended ang operation namin, sinuspend lang ang operations of unloading of toilet and kitchen waste and that applies to all, not just to us,” he said.
He added that he respects the findings of the Senate inquiry and will comply with SBMA’s directive.
“We are a good corporate citizen. We follow the rules, hindi naman kami nagva-violate ng rules eh. We follow what the rules are kung ‘yan ang gusto ng SBMA then we will follow. And we do that in 34 countries, wala kaming conflict sa ibang regulators sa 34 countries,” he said.
Mayuga also raised the issue of business rivalry in the controversy involving alleged toxic waste dumped in Subic Bay.
He alleged that another contractor may have made the report to discredit Glenn Marine.
“Nalulungkot ako kasi umabot na ‘to ng malayong-malayo, may mga nagra-rally na. Eh ang pulut-dulo nito ay business rivalry. Parang dalawang nagbebenta ng tuyo, ‘yung tuyo [namin] mas mabili. Ngayon, sinabi ng isa na ‘yung tuyo namin may formalin. Ganoon lang kasimple,” he said.
Mayuga, however, said Glenn Marine’s operations will continue in other parts of the country, but they will be more vigilant knowing that all eyes are on them.
“We make sure that we comply, lalo na kung may bagong rules. Kung may bagong rules, susundin naman namin eh,” he said.
