MANILA, Philippines – National Food Authority (NFA) Administrator Lito Banayo is planning to resign from his post to pursue a career in politics in Agusan del Norte.
“Balak ko na mag-file na ng certificate of candidacy for congressman ng first district of Agusan del Norte,” said Banayo.
He said his decision to resign is not because of the challenges of his job at the NFA, particularly the task of monitoring the supply of rice.
“Ang laki nu’ng ibinaba ng [rice] importation. Pangalawa, ang presyo ng bigas sa pamilihan, nagawa naman naming stable. Gusto ko sanang maisulong finally, ay ‘yung National Land Use policy,” he said.
Aside from being the postmaster general of the late former President Corazon Aquino, Philippine Tourism Authority manager in the Estrada administration and NFA chief in the current administration, Banayo was also the campaign strategist of several politicians, including Senators Panfilo Lacson and Francis “Chiz” Escudero.
Banayo is a member of the administration ally Nationalist People's Coalition.
But he also has ties with the United Nationalist Alliance, led by his former boss, former President Joseph Estrada.
Biazon stays in Customs
Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon, meanwhile, has decided to withdraw his plans to run for senator in 2013.
“If I may quote the President, ang sabi po niya sa akin, ‘I will be very glad if you stayed with the Bureau of Customs,” said Biazon.
Biazon also admitted that his chances of winning may be slim since he ranked in the 16th-23rd place in the latest senatorial race survey of Pulse Asia.
