MANILA, Philippines – The story about a pregnant woman who sliced open her stomach to remove the baby she was carrying got strong reactions from netizens.
The reactions on ABS-CBN News Channel's (ANC) social media, for instance, ranged from pity to incredulity.
On Twitter, Kota Winters asked if this is madness in poverty or courage of the poor, while Rinsky Land couldn't help but think about the poor baby.
Lesli Piagnco shared her sentiment on Facebook. She wished that the baby should have been given up for adoption.
Another Facebook user, Mela Piguing, said no woman in her right state of mind would do this to herself and her baby.
The staff of the Ospital ng Sampaloc in Manila was left dumbfounded when a woman with an incision on her stomach asked to be confined on Tuesday.
The woman admitted she sliced herself open to remove her baby.
"Kitchen knife [ang ginamit panghiwa], panghiwa ng karne-karne. [Tanong ko], anong ginamit mong pang-tahi? Ordinary needle. [Tanong ko, anong] Ginamit mong suture? Ordinary na sinulid," said Dr. Mary Grace Mayuga, recounting her conversation with the woman.
After a while, her family arrived with the body of her lifeless child.
“Nasaan? sabi namin. Nandoon daw sa bahay. Binalot niya ng kumot inilagay niya sa ilalim ng kama,” the doctor recalled.
The family could not explain how the child died or what drove the woman to do what she did.
“Kasi daw, kailangan niyang tanggalin dahil maraming magagalit,” Mayuga added.
However, police said it’s possible that the mother could be charged with abortion.
“May sakit lang daw itong fatty liver [ang sabi sa duktor]. Noon dalin ito sa ospital, sabi ng mga duktor, may tahi na yung pagkaka-slash nung tagiliran niya,” said Senior Inspector Rodolfo Samoranos, chief investigator of the Sta. Mesa Police Station.
The mother remains in the hospital to determine if her other organs were injured in the procedure.
She will also undergo a psychiatric test.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported on Saturday that the 28-year-old woman, a native of Isabela province, was a graduate of midwifery, but it added that midwives are not allowed to perform surgeries. Her aborted fetus was already 9 months or full term. -- with a report from Niko Baua, ABS-CBN News
