MANILA, Philippines - Defense counsels of Chief Justice Renato Corona has sought the inhibition of Senator Edgardo Angara from voting in the impeachment trial, citing his possible bias being the father of a prosecution spokesman.

The defense filed its motion on Monday at the resumption of the trial following a break for six weeks.

Angara’s son, Juan Edgardo, is one of the House prosecution panel's spokesmen.

The prosecution, however, questioned the timing of the pleading with prosecution spokesman Miro Quimbo calling it “suspect.”

Quimbo said that if one follows the rationale of the defense, the defense should also seek the inhibition of Senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Jinggoy Estrada, whose son and brother, respectively, voted to impeach Corona last year.

The younger Angara, meantime, said the defense is merely throwing intrigues at him and his father. He said his father has been known for being independent-minded.
