MANILA – Twenty-three-old "Lyka" thought she met a fine man in her boyfriend until the latter revealed his true colors later on in their relationship.
Lyka (not her real name) bravely came out to the media recently to share her experience at the hands of her boyfriend of four months, 19-year-old James Emerson.
She said, as with any blossoming relationship, the one she had with James showed so much potential.
"At first, okay po siya. In fact, the very first time na na-meet ko siya, may dala pa siyang flowers - typical guy na imposibleng hindi ka ma-fall," Lyka told ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda's "Punto por Punto" segment.
Lyka, however, said James suddenly became violent during the latter part of their nearly 4-month relationship.
She said James used different objects, including her smartphone, in hitting her whenever they had misunderstandings.
"During the first month naman po, okay kami eh. Tinatapon niya yun sa akin," she said.
Lyka was referring to the January 28 incident where James, armed with a brass knuckle, was caught on a surveillance camera beating her on the street after an argument.
She said all her attempts to break up with James ended in violence.
"During the first month namin, tinry ko nang makipag-break. Napaka-possessive niya."
Temporary protection order
Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, in the same "Umagang Kay Ganda" segment, said Lyka can press charges against James for violating Republic Act 9262, or the " Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004."
Topacio said James Emerson cannot be arrested yet, even if he was caught beating up Lyka on camera.
"Sadly 'di namaari. Hindi na kasi in the act of commiting the crime or yung 'In flagrante delicto (In blazing offence),'" he said. "Kung magde-demanda, it will go the usual process of preliminary investigation."
She said James never showed any remorse for what he did, even threatening her with retaliation if she files a case against him.
With James hurling threats to Lyka, Topacio advised the battered woman to file a petition for a temporary protection order against her ex-boyfriend.
Asked about her message for her former boyfriend, Lyka said: "Alam kong independent ka na.
